About LoCave

A product of IRNAS Technologies, built for the people who go underground.

Why it exists

LoCave started from a plain observation: cave teams treat being out of contact as a fact of the environment, and it does not have to be. Rock stops radio. But rock does not stop a cable, and a cable light enough to carry in has not been a realistic option until recently.

The system pairs rapid-deployment fibre optics with short-range radio at each node. That combination is what makes it fast and cheap enough to use on an ordinary trip, rather than a piece of equipment that only appears once something has already gone wrong.

LoCave is developed and manufactured by IRNAS Technologies d.o.o. in Maribor, Slovenia — a country with a great many caves, and with the people who know them.

Cross-section of a cave: a surface gateway at the entrance feeds a fibre line down the passage, connecting nodes that each light a pocket of radio coverage for cavers deeper in.
